I plugged a non essential coolant channel with a bolt and a healthy dab of permatex 1. Is this going to hold or will it explode all over the engine bay or at least leak a bit?

as long as the permatex sets up properly it should be good for a few short trips
but its not a permanent solution
you can also un-screw your radiator cap a bit to relive some pressure on the system just make sure to keep a eye on the water temp though

Put a hose clamp on there and you'll be all set. Otherwise it will eventually fail in a most likely spectacular fashion.

Need more information. Was it a threaded hole? Or did you just jam a bolt into a hose? Or what?
If it was a bolt hole, i.e. straight threads, some RTV should hold for a while. If it was pipe threads (reducing in diameter) you are good to go. If there were no threads and you just jammed a bolt into a tight fitting hole with some RTV, I wouldn't trust it very far.

Put a hose clamp on it and you'll be good.

Yeah, we need more info. If it's threaded there's a pretty good chance you will be OK.

no threads. i just but in the closest fitting bolt i had and slathered it with permatex 1. the pressurized system runs about 16psi i think.

If it is a hose, put a clamp on it. If is not clampable, better carry some extra coolant with you.

Yep. Clamp that sucker, and make sure it's not dangling anywhere important. If the bolt's a tight fit, this should be sufficient—even without the Permatex.
